Sustainable Agriculture Supplies Ireland — 2026 Guide

"Sustainable" used to be a polite marketing label on a fertiliser bag. In 2026, it means specific things: protected urea instead of CAN, clover swards cutting chemical N, LESS slurry application instead of splash plate, biostimulants alongside chemistry, and biochar and composts keeping organic matter in the soil. Irish farmers face both a carrot (TAMS grants, ACRES payments) and a stick (Nitrates Directive tightening). Here's the sourcing map for what actually works.

Protected urea — now the Irish default

Protected urea (urea + urease inhibitor, usually NBPT or a blend) has overtaken CAN on most Irish farms by 2026 because of the significant ammonia-emissions reduction. DAFM guidance and scheme pressure both point here. Per-bag cost is slightly above straight urea, typically parity to CAN by kg of N.

Clover & multi-species swards

Sward-based N replacement is the biggest sustainability lever on most Irish farms. A clover-rich sward can cut chemical N by 30–50%, with milk-solids and grazing performance that matches or beats PRG-only at scale.

Clover reality check: you cut your chemical N, but you need to manage the sward differently — later grazing, adjusted silage cuts, clover-safe sprays only. Factor the management learning curve as a cost, not just the seed.

LESS slurry application

Low-emission slurry spreading is now mandatory for many derogation and scheme requirements, and TAMS funds the kit. Options:

Dealers: Major Equipment, Slurryquip, Abbey Machinery, SlurryKat — all Irish-made, all Irish-dealer networks.

Biostimulants & biologicals

Biostimulants are the fastest-growing category in Irish tillage and intensive grass. Not a replacement for NPK but demonstrably effective for tiller number, root biomass, stress tolerance.

Irish-made compost, biochar & soil conditioners

Low-input pest & disease kit

Energy & on-farm renewables — adjacent supply

Schemes & funding you can match to purchases (2026)

Rules update annually — check DAFM's current TAMS and ACRES guidance before treating grant aid as a sure thing.
